Avocados are one of the wonderful fruits of summer. High in nutrition and flavor, nothing signals the start of summer like a delicious lime guacamole dip with tortilla chips. If you like guacamole, you’ll love the Lamb Hass Avocado.
In the late 1980s, Avocado breeders at UC Riverside planted 10,000 seedlings at the Bob Lamb Ranch in Camarillo. From 1990 to 1996, Avocados with promising traits were selected from this trial for further testing. One seedling that looked like Hass was chosen because it produced more fruit than Hass, the fruit matured later in the year (during the summer), and was a smaller tree. This seedling was named ‘Lamb Hass’ to honor Bob Lamb and the Lamb family. It is gaining in popularity in recent years as a commercial and backyard variety due to its exceptional flavor, easy peeling qualities, and because they are high yielding.
Even when they are not fruiting, Lamb Hass Avocado trees are beautiful tropical trees. As with other tropical fruits, Lamb Hass Avocado trees can be grown indoors, on balconies, patios, and limited-space gardens. Enjoy the attractive trees as ornamentals if you choose to plant your Lamb Hass Avocado trees in an indoor container!
