Avocados are one of the wonderful fruits of summer. High in nutrition and flavor, nothing signals the start of summer like a delicious lime guacamole dip with tortilla chips. If you like guacamole, the Fuerte Avocado is a must-grow. Fuerte Avocados are pear shaped with a medium thick and slightly pebbly green skin that darkens to a purplish black when fully ripe.
The Fuerte Avocado is a hybrid between Mexican and Guatemalan Avocado that originated in Puebla, Mexico. In 1911, Carl Schmidt, a 21-year-old American, traveled to Mexico in search of avocado trees that produced avocados of outstanding quality. Schmidt cut budwood from the best trees, numbered each, and shipped them by Wells Fargo to Altadena, California. While most buds refused to adapt to the soil and climate of California, one flourished. After surviving the great freeze of 1913, it was given the name Fuerte, the Spanish word for “strong.” The Fuerte tree that Schmidt found in Mexico created California’s avocado industry, introducing the United States to one of the most cold-hardy varieties of avocado.
Even when they are not fruiting, Fuerte Avocado trees are beautiful tropical trees. As with other tropical fruits, Fuerte Avocado trees can be grown indoors, on balconies, patios, and limited-space gardens. Fuerte are one of the hardiest avocado varieties available. Enjoy the attractive trees as ornamentals if you choose to plant your Fuerte Avocado trees in an indoor container!
